LAPLANDER GETS UP

Young Driver’s First Win

Laplander gained his young driver, C. Middleton, aged 18, his first win at a totalisator meeting when he outfinished Belmartial in the Ripcord Handicap. Middleton, a son of the four-year-old’s Highbank ownertrainer, G. F. Middleton, was having only his fifth drive in a race.

C. Middleton is due to leave for the United States in the next 24 hours to help look after 24 horses in an aircraft charter by Yonkers Raceway, New York. He hopes to stay and work there for some months.

Laplander was one of the horses sent to a break when Neon Evander’s bit broke and she went away in an uncontrollable gallop. R. M. Cameron kept him clear of the field and she galloped on out by from four to 10 lengths. She passed the post first, but was immediately disqualified from the race. Laplander looked to have little chance of success when he was some 10 lengths from the lead at the half-mile. However. he gradualy improved and responded well for Middleton to win by more than a length from Belmartial, another early breaker.

Shady Maid, a firm favourite in the absence of Annabelle Lee. which slightly injured a knee on the eve of the race, fought on for a distant third.
