Novis Trophy To Naylor

Catamarans and Javelins turned on some fine performances to dominate the results of the weekend’s yacht racing.

Conditions on Saturday, and again yesterday, were perfect and there were some close finishes in many classes. Yesterday afternoon at Lyttelton, the Mount Pleasant Sioux class Mon Pore (T. Naylor) carried off the Norriss Barometer after a closely-fought duel. Naylor won through an act of sportsmanship by the veteran skipper, C. Papps, who finishing second over-all. He had the race won, but withdraw for fouling the Flying Dutchman, Caprice, shortly after the start. The clear winner in the B division was Giavelina (W. H. Beere and S. Tiller), which again had another good week-end, winning both its races. There was a battle for the minor positions on both days in this division, Cirrus, Radiant, Sundowner, and Ra all having their turns. In the C division, the major honours yesterday went to the Waimakariri Junior Cherub, Glenley (E. Agnew and Miss G. Denvir) sailing well to save their handicap time on the fleet-footed O.K.s. In this class on Saturday, R. Gibson convincingly defeated the other skippers, D. Hobson had to be content with second place, and S. Tibble moved up to third ahead of P. Whitmore. In the P class it was the Pleasant Point yachtsmen, C. Price, who again impressed with two fastest times; and on the Estuary P. Lester triumphed over P. Stemmer on Saturday the positions being reversed yesterday. The Mount Pleasant A class skipper, B. Alexander, nearly caused an upset at Christchurch on Saturday when he led C. Papps for five of the six laps and only lost the lead at the top of the last beat. At one stage he was going so well that Papps would make no impression at all on Sidewinder. Results.
