Obituary Mr F. Townshend
The death occurred recently of Mr Francis Townshend, who was well known in the Leeston district for 60 years. He was 87. Mr Townshend was a dentist at Leeston for 40 years, from 1908.
He took an active part in local affairs and was one of the original members of the Leeston Town Board, which was constituted in 1922.
For a long time he was a very active member of the Ellesmere Brass Band. A keen bowler he was a past president of the Leeston Bowling, Tennis and Croquet Club. He was also a member of Waihora Masonic Lodge for more than 50 years.
Mr Townshend was one of the first motorists in the district, his first car being one which had a steering tiller. An Alldays and Onions and a Royal Enfield motor-cycle with sidecar were among his early possessions. Mr Townshend is survived by a daughter, Mrs V. G. Mason, of Leeston, and two sons, Messrs Philip Townshend (Halsweli) and Ronald Townshend (Christchurch).
