Five Persons Killed In Road Accidents
Five persons were killed in separate accidents on New Zealand roads at the week-end, according to the Press Association.
No fatal accidents were reported in the Christchurch area.
A Blenheim youth died when his car crashed into a two-pole power transformer in Old Renwick Road, Blenheim, on Friday night He was Linton John Kane, 18-year-old son of Mrs D. V. Kane, of 185 High Street. The four passengers in the car were all injured and taken to the Wairau Hospital. Their condition is said to be satisfactory. DIED IN HOSPITAL An eight-year-old boy who was seriously injured in a traffic accident on the Roto-rua-Taupo State Highway on Friday night died on Saturday morning in the Rotorua Hospital. He was
Geoffrey Milne, son of Mr V. G. Milne, of Reporoa, whose car was involved in a collision with another six miles south of Rotorua.
Six other people admitted to hospital are in a satisfactory condition. CRASH ON BEND
A man was killed when the car he was driving failed to take a bend in Ponsonby, at 7.30 a.m. on Saturday. He was Edward Selwyn. aged 26, of 8 Cleave Road, Green Bay.
A pedestrian struck by the car as it crashed into a building is in a fair condition in the Middlemore Hospital. He is Cedric Ernest Gundry, aged 35, of 91 Jervois Road, Ponsonby. His right leg was severed below the knee. YOUTH KILLED A 20-year-old farm worker was killed instantly on Saturday night when the car in which he was a passenger failed to negotiate an intersection near Gisborne He was Alex Watson, of Levin, who had been in Gisborne for about a week. The three other occupants of the car were all admitted to the Cook Hospital. The driver, Edward Joseph Baker, aged 16, suffered a serious throat injury, but his condition tonight is described as satisfactory. The other two passengers suffered only slight injuries. CHILD KILLED A 15-month-old girl was killed when she was run over by an ice-cream vendor’s van at 5 p.m. on Friday. She was Sonia Ellis Harkin, daughter of Mr and Mrs F. J. Harkin, of 2 Maybell Place, Kelston.
A police officer said the child had crawled underneath the van while it was stopped almost outside her home. When the van moved off, it ran over her.
