Price Of Failure
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) SYDNEY
In the quiet Sydney Harbour backwater of Berry’s Bay a beautiful, sleek yacht swings at her moorings—her hull gathering weeds and barnacles.
Only her mast, cradled along the once shiny, polished deck, is protected from the winds and weather. This is Dame Pattie today—the 12-metre yacht which cost $500,000 to challenge for the America’s Cup last year. Dame Pattie, once the pride of Australia, is up for sale—at a cost estimated to
be about $lOO,OOO, including gear. The chairman of the unsuccessful Dame Pattie syndicate, Mr E. Christensen, said yesterday that he had had several inquiries about the yacht from the United States.
“But we want to keep her in Australia,” he added. Dame Pattie will almost certainly not represent Australia again in an America’s Cup. Already a new syndicate has commissioned Mr Alan Payne, the Australian designer of the equally unfortunate America’s Cup challenger Gretel in 1964, to begin work on plans for a new 12-metre yacht.
