‘CIVILIAN SPY’

Vietnamese Girl (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) CANBERRA, March 13. The Prime Minister, Mr John Gorton, today described the Viet Cong girl who is in the centre of torture allegations by Australian Army men in Vietnam as “a civilian spy.”

He told Federal Parliament that the girl had been observing the Australian base and reporting by radio. He said that no doubt she had been used to range in mortar fire. He said this civilian spy had been captured by Australian troops. Mr Gorton was replying to the Deputy Leader of the Opposition, Mr Lance Barnard, who asked in the House of Representatives why the notice paper made no provision for a statement to Parliament by the Army Minister, Mr Phillip Lynch. Mr Gorton said the capture of the spy and allegations which had been made warranted the fullest investigation, and when this was made there would be a statement to Parliament, probably within two days.
