Festival Diary

Bach In Cathedral

A programme of Chorale Preludes by Bach will be played on the big romantic organ in Christchurch Cathedral today by the Cathedral organist, C. Foster Browne.

The festival lunch-hour concert will start at 1.10 p.m. There is no admission charge. It was as an organist that Bach was known in his lifetime and indeed for a long time after his death. Although his organ works comprise only a fraction of his compositions the number is still monumental in scale. The Chorale Preludes were at the heart of Bach’s spiritual and religious life. The works to be played include: “Oh Christ Who Makes Us Joyful,” “Sleepers Awake,” “Come Holy Ghost Lord God,” “Rejoice Beloved Christians,” “Oh Spotless Lamb God,” “Gpd, I Will Not Depart,” “My Inmost Heart Does Yearn,” and “Christ Came to Jordan.” The Cathedral organ was built in 1926.
