Market Gains Ground In Heavy Trading

The share market continued to gain ground on New Zealand stock exchanges yesterday. There were 22 rises and 15 falls. Turnovers were again heavy, and the range of issues traded (102) was the widest for more than a year.

Movements were generally small.

B.H.P. fell Tsc to 1760 c. N.Z. Cement had the largest rise, 10c to 160 c; the company announced that its bid for Southland Cement was successful. Bank of N.S.W. recovered 5c to 605 c.

Falls in the New Zealand list were mainly confined to second-line stocks, but Rothmans fell sc, to 190 c, N.Z. Forest Products lost 3c of recent gains to sell at 252 c, and South British Insurance at 375 c was 1c cheaper. Among the rises Wattie, 2c higher at 192 c, Dominion Breweries, which recovered 3c to 165 c, U.E.B. Industires, 2c up to 79c and Ajax-G.K.N., 4c dearer at 137 c, stood out.
