Lyttelton Police Officer Retires

Senior-Sergeant D. G. M. Simpson, who has been stationed at Lyttelton for the last 10 years will retire today after 38 years in the Police. Senior-Sergeant Simpson has represented the provinces of Waikato, Canterbury and Buller at Rugby. He was champion heavyweight wrestler of Canterbury for three years (1932, 1933, 1934). In 1934 he was also runner-up in the Australian Inter-state Police wrestling heavyweight championships. Born at Totara Flat, SeniorSergeant Simpson spent most of his youth on his father’s farm at Te Poi near the Kaimai Ranges. Because there was no school his father helped to build one. His family were among the first white settlers in the area.

Senior-Sergeant Simpson has been farwelled by his friends and shipping associates at the port. He will live in Christchurch in retirement.

He said that his police career, which began at Wellington, had been a satisfying one. His most amusing experience was when he had to arrest a driver in Christchurch on a charge of being drunk in charge of a cab. One constable drove the cab to the station while Senior-Sergeant Simpson held the cabby down.

Senior-Sergeant P. J. Alty of Dunedin will succeed Senior-Sergeant Simpson at Lyttelton.
