CHILDREN’S HOMES
Arrangements For Appeal
At least 600 collectors will be on streets in the city and in 28 suburban areas for the Christchurch Children’s Homes Appeal on Friday. The secretary of the appeal (Mrs F. S. Miller-Mead) said that most of the collectors were from Churches, but some school children would help before and after school. Collectors will work from 7.30 a.m. to 5 p.m. “The children who benefit are of all denominations and those without one. All the Churches ask is whether a child needs help.” Last year 709 children were helped. Because of this 96 families remained together as one unit and this involved 441 children. Foster homes admitted 104 children and 164 children were admitted to cottage homes run by the Churches.
The money raised in the October house-to-house appeal and the street appeal is divided evenly among the Anglican, Methodist and Presbyterian children’s homes. Last year $2214 was raised from the street appeal. It is hoped that this will be exceeded this year because the appeal is being held during the Pan Pacific Arts Festival.
