No Electoral Change In Malvern Until 1971

The Malvern County Council yesterday agreed that there should be no change in the representation on the council until 1971. The county was re-formed recently by the merger with Tawera. Under the amalgamation agreement, the number of councillors has to be reduced to 12 in the first triennial election after April 1, 1971.

The Counties Act, 1956, requires all local bodies to consider their representation during March of the year of local body elections. “It is obvious that we will have to have an overhaul of the whole riding representation in the county before 1971,” said Cr R. M. D. Johnson. “However, there is not

much point in doing this at present. We should have a long look at the situation.” At present there are 13 councillors, representing five ridings. Five councillors are from the Courtenay riding, three from the Selwyn riding, two each from the Sheffield and Tawera ridings and one from the Homebush riding. The County Clerk (Mr B. W. Perrin) reported that of the total rate levy of 5193.933, $1517 remained unpaid. This represented a collection of 99.22 per cent, compared with a 99.14 per cent last year.

The new offices of the council in Darfield are to be opened by the Minister of Internal Affairs (Mr Seath) on i April 5.
