Cosmetics Company Director Remanded
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, February 27. Robert John Gardner, aged 39, a company director, appeared before Mr H. Rosen, S.M., today on charges of false pretences. He was remanded for a week without pleading.
Bail was discussed in chambers, but refused. Detective Sergeant J. Sheehan, who escorted Gardner handcuffed off an aircraft at Auckland international airport yesterday after accompanying him from London where an extradition order had been granted, asked for the remand. Counsel, Mr L. W. Brown, consented. Gardner was charged that on June 1, 1966, at Auckland, with intent to defraud, he in-
duced Barrie lan Currie to execute and/or make a valuable security a cheque for $331.4 in favour of Leidrum and Hartnell, Ltd, by falsely representing that the company was carrying on a bona fide business and would supply goods to that value. He was further charged that on the same day he obtained £331 4s from Mr Currie by falsely representing that the same company was carrying on a bona fide business and would supply goods to that value.
