DOWLING HAPPY
The mental application of the New Zealand team to a five-day test was one of the most important factors in yesterday’s victory, G. T. Dowling said. “The other vital factor was the response of the bowlers in India’s second innings after I had enforced the follow-on. Knowing that the pitch was deteriorating and we would have to bat last, it was most important that we restricted the Indians to a score of about 300,” he said. “From four for 230 we had India out for 301 and left ourselves with a reasonable number of runs to score. “However, I don’t think 1 would have wanted to chase many more runs,” he added. 89894 GATE The attendance at Lancaster Park yesterday was about 1250 and the gate takings $684. The total attendance for the match was about 20,000 and the receipts $9894.
