INCREASE URGED
U nemploy ment Benefit The unemployed should re ceive, at the very least, the minimum wage prevailing in New Zealand, the president of the Canterbury Trades Council of the Federation of Labour (Mr R. A. Hill) said yesterday. He said that this was a decision of the council. “The present Government is solely to blame for the situation which has developed over the last 12 months,” said Mr Hill. “It is wrong to expect anyone to exist on the pittance being handed out to the unemployed.” Mr Hill said that the unemployed would prefer to be doing something useful and earning their money, rather than receiving a dole. The Trades Council had expressed concern at its last meeting at the growing number of unemployed. It was also concerned that there would be a much larger number unemployed later in the year, when seasonal workers would be added to the list.
“The council is firmly of the opinion that every citizen who is able and willing to work is entitled to a job,” he said.
