"Raw Data” On School Needs
Within two months the I Education Department research staff should have “a great deal of raw data” on future high school requirements, the Regional Superintendent of Education (Mr S. S. P. Hamilton) informed the Christchurch Secondary Schools’ Council last evening. (It was explained that by “raw data” Mr Hamilton meant facts and statistics which had not been analysed.)
Mr Hamilton said that the study of needs, now being made by the department and the council, was complicated and it was clear that the two bodies would have to work closely together to ensure the healthy state of all school rolls and the buildings required for them in the future. Mr Hamilton will meet the council at its April meeting to discuss available information and next steps in the study. The Schools’ Council was asked to comment on district planning schemes for Halswell, Waimairi and Kaiapoj. It made no objection to proposed new residential zones. It will tell Halswell that if the County Council further encouraged residential development and if bus services to Lincoln High School, ended, there could be a need for a high school on the Tai Tapu side of the Halswell township; it will tell Waimairi that the Christchurch Boys’ High School and Burnside High Schools and three sites held for possible schools adjoining Burnside, in Breens Road, and in Tuckers Road are not affected; and it will tell Kaiapoi that the high school site held there will not be affected by residential development nearer the sea.
