UNIVERSITY CLASSES

“Some Very Large”

First-year students among the 5387 enrolled up to yesterday at the University of Canterbury numbered 1455, compared with 1420 at the same time last year. The Vice-Chancellor (Professor N. C. Phillips) told the University Council in the afternoon that this would present some very large stage I classes.

English would have 772, history 274, and others with more than 250 included psychology, education, sociology, applied and pure mathematics, economics, physics, and chemistry. Professor Phillips said that Education Department roll predictions, made last year, put Canterbury’s total at a minimum of 5340 and a maximum of 6050 for this year. If the roll rose as the council expected to 5750 by July 1, the date for statistics, it would be about half way between these figures. In faculties, enrolments had increased 20 per cent in law, 14 per cent in arts, and 10 per cent in science.
