Duty On Soldiers’ Gifts

Sir,—“Wondering” wrote on the subject of customs duty on gifts from overseas. I have a son at present serving in the New Zealand Army in Malaysia. He is to go to Vietnam in May, and I would be very interested to know what the Customs Department does regarding gifts sent by him to myself and members of my family. He recently sent my daughter a necklace which we calculated to be worth about $l5, yet no duty was charged. Could the Customs Department give a general outline on its policy on soldiers’ gifts as my son has told us he intends sending his mother a gift soon, and also intends sending something home he has bought for himself.— Yours, etc.,
