Some 90 Readings

Cheviot, Waiau, Culverden, Ashburton, Fairlie, Tekapo and Geraldine all had temperatures of 90 degrees or more yesterday.

Ashburton had its third hottest day for the summer with a maximum temperature of 91.2 degrees in the early afternoon. It climbed from just below 80 degrees at 9 a.m. to 88 degrees at 1 p.m. Continuing hot, dry conditions in the Grey county resulted in scrub fires and empty water tanks in some rural areas. A temperature of 78 degrees was recorded in a Greymouth shop in the early afternoon.

North Canterbury.—Temperatures included Kaikoura, 73.3 degrees at 2 p.m.; Cheviot, 90 degrees at noon; Hantner Springs, 85 degrees at 2.30 p.m., with a humidity of 18 per cent; Waiau, 91 degrees at noon; Culverden, 91 degrees at noon; Rangiora, 83 degrees at 1 p.m. Christchurch.—The temperature climbed steadily from 56 degrees at 6 a.m. to a maximum for the day of 82.6 degrees at 1.30 p.m., accord--ing to the readings at the meteorological office at Hare wood. It then fell slowly to 71 degrees at 7 p.m. The temperature in the Botanic Gardens was 77 degrees at 3 p.m.

South Canterbury. The temperature at Fairlie was 92 degrees, and at Tekapo and Geraldine 90 degrees at 3 p.m. The maximum temperature in Timaru was 75 degrees at 3 p.m. In Otago, Roxburgh registered 95 degrees at 4 p.m., and Millers Flat had the same temperature an houri later.
