Counselling By M.P.

The Labour member of Parliament for Southern Maori (Mrs W. Tirikatene-Sullivan) yesterday took her turn in the office of the Labour Representation Committee at the Trades Hall, counselling and interviewing members of the public. It was her duty on the roster system of Labour members of Parliament to aid the public. She was assisted by two local officers—one from the New Zealand Maori Council and the other from the Maori Women’s Welfare League. Mrs Tirikatene-Sullivan said that those interviewed were particularly concerned about the effect of the Maori Affairs Amendment Act which would come into force on April 1. “Their concern is based on their desire to retain their land interests. The queries I had this afternoon show the Maoris don’t want to sell,” she said.

On Sunday. Mrs TirikateneSullivan visited Temuka, where she received petitions on local matters. She was also present at the annual meeting of the South Island Maori Basketball Association.
