21 Die, 15 Injured

An inquiry begins today into a fire which raged through part of a mental hospial in this Midlands town, killing 21 women patients, a hospital spokesman said today.

Another 15 were injured, two seriously. Ambulances rushed them to another hospital nearby after emergency staff led them down from smoke-filled rooms on the first floor. “We have no idea how the fire started or why it spread so quickly,” a spokesman for the Shelton Mental Hospital said.
