FORECAST TO MIDNIGHT Situation.—A ridge, of high pressure over northern New Zealand is moving away to the east; a depression is deepening in the Tasman Sea and should move on to southern parts of the South Island. Forecast:

Canterbury.—Fresh or strong north-westerlies predominating; further rain in the Alps; cloud increasing elsewhere and occasional rain developing; mild.

Kaikoura coast and central Marlborough.— Fresh north-west winds becoming strong and gusty in places around Cook Strait; fine and warm at first; cloudy this afternoon with periods of rain developing. Marlborough Sounds and Nelson.—North to north-west winds strong to gale force in places around Cook Strait, otherwise moderate or fresh; cloudy with rain in Nelson spreading into the Sounds later this morning.

Buller and Westland.—Fresh to strong northerlies backing westerly later today; rain this morning heavy at times; cool, showery weather after the wind change. Outlook.—All districts: Unsettled. CHRISTCHURCH READINGS
