N.Z. WILL BACK GAMES BOWLS

(New Zealand Press Association)

GREYMOUTH.

Because of the difficulties holding the world bowling championships, it may be necessary to fall back on the Commonwealth Games.

The president of the New Zealand Bowling Association (Mr G. Jolly) said this in Greymouth yesterday. “At the New Zealand association’s annual meeting we decided to support Commonwealth Games bowling in principle,” he said. “The idea of the world championships was originally backed because of its wider appeal, but now with the difficulties faced in holding the championships, especially economic, the Commonwealth Games programme may include bowls again.” He said the national associations has a special fund to finance teams to the games. Bowls was omitted from the programme after the 1962 Perth games. In 1966, the world championships were held for the first time in Sydney, while the Commonwealth Games were held in Kingston, Jamaica.
