Problem Of Staffing
Increased numbers in the sixth form caused staffing problems, the headmaster of the Burnside High School (Mr C. Cross) told the board of governors last evening. The present staffing ratio was not adequate for manageable class numbers in the senior school, Mr Cross said. Sixth forms should not be larger than 20, but Burnside was compelled to consider making some of the sixth form classes up to 35 pupils. The schools’roll was 1140, compared with 1066 last year. There were 25 more pupils in form 6A, 32 more in 6B and 17 more in the fifth form. The increase in 6A was, he felt, what would be a normal increase, Mr Cross said. Economic conditions might have some bearing on the increased number of 6B pupils. Building development would have to include administrative offices and a large room to be used for supervised study for fifth formers.
Field excursions to the Arthur’s Pass area and involving about 90 sixth-form biology students were being planned for next month.
