Three Senior Priests

Three senior priests of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Christchurch have been honoured by Pope Paul VI with the rank of domestic prelate. They are the Very Rev. O. Gallagher, the Very Rev. T. McKeon, and the Very Rev. G. V. Daly. The honour was announced yesterday by the Bishop of Christchurch (the Most Rev. B. P. Ashby), who said the Pope had also conferred the award of Benemerenti on Mr David Barrett, who died last week, for his outstanding contribution to Roman Catholic charities in the diocese.

Monsignor Gallagher, parish priest of Woolston, was ordained a priest at Kilkenny. Ireland, in 1919. He has served in a number of parishes in the diocese. Monsignor McKeon, recently retired, parish priest of » Greymouth, was ordained at Kilkenny, Ireland, in 1923. He has been assistant priest in a number of parishes, and parish priest in Lyttelton, North Timaru and Greymouth.

Monsignor Daly, ordained in Christchurch in 1927, is parish priest of Mairehau. He has served in many parishes, and is the chairman of the New Zealand Red Cross SoMr Barrett served for many years as a full-time voluntary worker in Catholic Social Services. He served the community in a number of welfare organisations and the R.S.A., and was awarded a British Empire Medal in the Queen’s Birthday honours last year. He was an active worker in the parish of St Mary’s, Christchurch. Mr Barrett was informed of the impending award some weeks before his death. Personal Items Dr S. N. Adams, the director of the Tussock Grasslands and Mountain Lands Institute since 1965, has been appointed principal scientific officer in the Chemical and Animal Nutrition Division of the Northern Ireland Ministry of Agriculture, and will be stationed at Queen’s University, Belfast. Mr R. D. Evans, of Kaiapoi. and Mr I. H, Newsome, of Wanganui, have been reappointed members of the Wheat Board for terms of three years.—(P.A.)
