FORECAST TO MIDNIGHT

Situation. —A ridge of high pressure over northern New Zealand is moving slowly east; a cold front in the south-west Tasman Sea is expected to reach the south-west of the South Island this morning and cross most of the South Island later today. Forecast:

Canterbury.—North-easterlies about the coast and north-westerlies inland strong and gusty; rain in the Alps this morning and some light falls likely elsewhere later; a change to colder southerlies with showers is expected during this afternoon. Central Marlborough and Kaikoura Coast.— Strong and gusty north-west winds; mainly fine and warm but cloud increasing this afternoon with scattered showers developing, mostly about the ranges.

Marlborough Sounds.—Strong north-westerlies becoming gale force and gusty in many places; cloudy and mild with periods of rain developing this afternoon.

Buller and Westland.—Rain this morning with isolated thunderstorms; a change to colder southwesterlies is expected later today with showery weather. Outlook.—All districts: Unsettled.
