Price Of Vegetables
Sir, —Obviously “Old-Time Gardener” has been too busy growing vegetables to notice the numerous blocks of flats springing up in Christchurch. My husband and I live in such a block with 6ft of gravel on one side and a 12ft drive on the other. As we are both working and studying to advance in our careers we do not want a garden but prefer to go to a supermarket for vegetables, a florist’s for cut flowers, and a nearby park for beauty. Can we New Zealanders never forget our rural origins and become true city-dwellers? Surely it is this “half-pie” attitude that keeps us from joining the ranks of the developed nations. Everyone does several things inadequately instead of following the specialism which results in a high standard of living. Consequently we accept mediocrity with a shrug and a “She’ll be right.” Look where it lands us.—Yours, etc., CITY-DWELLER. February 7, 1968.
