COSMETICS FOR CHILDREN

An increasing number of Japanese children are using cosmetics, says the “Japan Times Weekly.” Manufacturers are delighted about the boom in sales, but dermatologists and cosmetics experts, are concerned about the children’s skins. Doctors are afraid that children’s naturally soft skins might be sacrificed to the “shopping boom” created by adults. Dr Iwao Pukui, of the National Children’s Hospital, said recently that children have natural protection for their skins and did not need cream. Cosmetics could be harmful as they contained chemical compounds that could cause Inflammation of the skin. In the children’s comers at Tokyo department stores, face creams, lotions, shampoos and hair tonics are displayed in containers shaped like “Thunderbird” and other television characters. The market has expanded to rural areas also. One department store in Ikebukuro reported selling an average of 30 children’s cosmetic items a day. Each cost the purchaser between 200 yen (48c) and 300 yen.

About 15 cosmetic companies produce children's cosmetics. Not all of them are cosmetic manufacturers; some are makers of dentifrices and others are toymakers.
