BOUGHT CAR BY CHEQUE
Man Had Only Nine Cents
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Feb. 7.
With only 9c credit in his bank account, John Maru, aged 36, a contract drainlayer, tendered a cheque for $2534 as a deposit on a 1965 .American car, Sergeant L. E. Cooper, prosecuting, said in the Magistrate’s Court today. Maru pleaded guilty to obtaining by false pretences a car valued at $3BOO from a Wellington motor firm. He also pleaded guilty to obtaining by false pretences fishing gear valued at $7O from an Auckland firm. Mr J. A. Wicks, S.M., remanded Maru on bail until February 14 for sentence and a probation officer’s report.
