ADDINGTON MARKET Stronger Sale For Two-tooth Ewes
Store sheep met a very satisfactory sale at Addington market yesterday, most classes showing a rise on last week’s values.
The main feature of the market was the stronger sale for two-tooth ewes. A large gallery followed the sale, and values rose by a full 50c a head, and in some cases more.
The upward trend in values continued in the adult sheep section, where the better class of fine-woolled ewe improved by 40c a head.
This week’s yarding was not a large one for a February sale. It numbered 17,385 head, compared with 17,245 last week. It consisted of 3500 wether lambs, 1470 ewe lambs, 4400 two-tooth ewes, 7900 adult ewes, and 115 wethers. Store Lambs Quality in the store lamb yarding was not as good as last week’s offering. There was a ;arge number of very small lambs, but all classes met a steady inquiry, and values were fully firm to a shade stronger than last week. The offering of 3300 wether lambs included a good selection of halfbreds and Corriedales, but the Romneys were generally poor, and the same could be said for the Down cross lambs. The pick of the Romney wether lambs sold to $5, but sales generally ranged from $3.20 to $3.70. Good average halfbreds and Corriedales sold from $4.30 to $4.75, with small down to $3.30. There was a sale of Down cross lambs in fat condition to $5.85, but with quality very plain, values generally ranged from $3 to $3.40. The feature of the ewe lamb sale was the premium being paid for fine-woolled lots which were well-grown and evenly woolled. A consignment from Hundalee topped the sale at $7.10, and there was another sale at $7. While these were good quality ewe lambs, they looked very dear alongside twotooth ewes, most of which could be bought cheaper. Best halfbred and Corriedale ewe lambs sold from $6 to $6.50, with two sales to $7.10, and average sold from $4.40 to $5. Best price for a small selection of Romneys was $5.20, with other sales ranging from $4 to $4.75. Sales of store lambs included: Wether lambs: A. S. Green (Annat), 59 Romneys at $4.90; Blakely Trust (Purau), 515 Romneys at $3.30 to $4.20; J. G. Palmer (Ward), 429 halfbreds at s3i6o to $4.25; estate W. H. Atkinson (Mason Hills, Waiau), 400 halfbreds at $3.60 to $4.35; estate I. O. Buchanan (High Peak), 325 halfbreds at $4.30 to $4.75. Ewe lambs: C. H. Upham fHundalee), 573 Corriedales at $6 to $7.10: G. H. Lang (Amber-
ley), 100 Corriedales at $6.40; A. S. Green (Annat), 67 Romneys at $5.20. Two-tooth Ewes A large gallery followed the two-tooth ewe sale, and values showed a marked rise on recent rates. Quality, however, was very good. The offering was the best seen so far this season, with several consignments of standard lines on offer. The sale opened on a firm note, but it picked up very quickly, and with a large number of buyers on hand, values showed a general rise of 50c a head, and in some cases the rise was as much as 70c. An interesting aspect of the sale was that Romney ewes shared in the improvement, with a number of sales of this class of sheep at $6 or more. Top price of the day was $8 for the tops of a line of Corriedales from the Rangiora district, and there were at least five other sales at more than $7. The pick of the Corriedales and halfbreds sold from $7 to $B, with good from $6 to $6.85, and average from $5.20 to $5.80. Romneys sold to $6.40, and there were regular sales at $5.40 to $5.80. Sale of two-tooth ewes included:— T. H. Burgin (Swannanoa), 214 Corriedales at $7.30 to $8; A. B. Anderson (Parnassus), 280 Romneys at $5.70 to $6.60: E. D. Crampton (Cheviot), 250 Corriedales at $5 to $5.75; R. D. Wesentra (Summerhill), 119 Romneys at $6.40; C. W. Robson (Springston), 185 Romneys at $6; A. J. Sloss (Omihi), 122 Romneys at $6.40; A. Zuppicich (Broadfield), 243 Corriedales at $7.10 to $7.50; A. and J. Woodward (Broadfield). 158 Halfbreds from $5.50 to $6.10, 93 Romneys at $5.40; estate G. O. Arres (Waikari), 98 Corriedales at $6.85; R. A. Black (Culverden), 135 Corriedales at $7.50 to $7.55; A. L. Shipley (Harewood). 655 Corriedales at $5.80 to $7.40; K. Bunn (Oxford), 160 Romneys at $6 to $6.35. Adult Sheep The adult sheep offering was a reasonably tidy selection, and with farmers generally making a move to secure replacements, the sale was a very satisfactory one. Ewes with good mouths were in particular demand, and
buyers continued to show a preference for fine-woolled lots. Useful Corriedale and halfbred ewes showed a rise of about 40c a head on last sale, but Romneys were mainly firm on last week’s rates. A feature of the adult sheep sale was the offering of an annual draft of four-year-old Corriedales from Culverden. These topped the market at $6.70. There were a number of sales of good, serviceable ewes at $5 or more, while the older ewe with little more than a season’s breeding use left, sold from $3.25 to $4.20. Sale of adult ewes included:— A. Hunter (Tai Tapu>, 118 five-year-old Romneys at $4.30; J. B. Hay (Pigeon Bay), 85 mixed aged Romneys, pre-lamb shorn, at $4.70; 350 five-year-old Romneys, pre-lamb shorn, at $4.30; estate G. O. Arres (Waikari), 158 mixed aged Corriedales at $4.80; T. H.
