ZP Waggons Off Lines

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Feb. 6. The General Manager of Railways (Mr I. Thomas) said today that as a precautionary measure the running of all ZP class goods waggons had been stopped for the time being. Mr Thomas said that this type of waggon had been involved in several goods train derailments in recent months. “I want to emphasise that this measure is simply a precaution. The evidence does not suggest that these waggons are unsafe to run, but it is clearly possible for them to become derailed in certain circumstances.

“investigations are continuing into the springing of these waggons so that appropriate corrective action can be taken,” he said. Mr Thomas said 168 waggons would be affected.
