RACING FIRST DAY OF C.J.C. MEETING TODAY

Decision On Start For Tumble Delayed

Tumble, one of the outstanding trialists at Riccarton on Thursday, has since been under treatment for soreness in a foreleg and the trainer, R. Preece, has delayed a decision about a start in the Canterbury Jockey Club’s Craven Plate until today.

Tumble was walking soundly yesterday, but was still showing signs of some soreness on the inside of one of his forelegs, although there had been improvement under treatment since Thursday night.

The Craven Plate will be the second leg of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s T.A.B. double, and peak runs by Tumble, Red Chips, Billy Joe, Pango and others would have ensured a keenly-contested race.

Billy Joe was not galloped ‘ at Riccarton on Thursday to give him time to recover < from the effects of racing and 1 travelling last week-end. His trainer, J. R. Shaw, I plans to give Mr W. H. Williamson’s consistent three- 1 year-old a short sprint this i morning. He is hopeful that the colt has held his form since Trentham, where he was twice fourth. After the scratching oft Palisade yesterday an all-Can-terbury finish to the Midsummer Handicap seems very likely. Next Please and Royal Blue ; are two of the stronger fancies, but the chances of Royal Master, Gingerbread, and s Millie Small look little less attractive. 3 Millie Small had some fill- t ing in a hock yesterday, but her owner-trainer, Mr T. I. $ Smith, was confident that his c My Pal mare would be fit for one of her best performances 2 today. Fields, with form, riders and comments, follow. e FIRST LEG OF ON-COURSE 3 DOUBLE
