Last Journey Of Electra

A former flagship of the National Airways Corporation’s Electra fleet, ZK-BUT, was loaded aboard the Hawea at Lyttelton yesterday on its final journey—to the Museum of Transport and Technology at Auckland. Parts will be used to restore another Electra already there. The Union Steam Ship Company is carrying the aircraft free of charge.

Supporters of the Ferrymead Museum of Science and Industry opposed the transfer of the aircraft to Auckland. Mr M. A. Connelly, M.P., sought the aid of the Minister of Civil Aviation (Mr Gordon) to keep the aircraft in Christchurch, but Mr Gordon replied that as Auckland had applied first his department had a firm commitment. He offered to help Mr Connelly by seeking the return to Christchurch of any parts of the Electra which might not be required in Auckland.
