Big Petrol Fire
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright) PARIS, Jan. 29. More than 500 firemen from 20 brigades battled today to prevent a fire at a northern Paris petro-chemical factory spreading to a nearby gasworks. Flames shot 1000 ft into the air as many of the 72 storage tanks at the Saint Denis plant exploded. Firemen could not get within 100 yards of the blaze because of intense heat
Four hundred people in riverside homes and Portuguese and Spaniards living in an adjoining shantytown were evacuated shortly after the fire broke out. The Paris-Soissons train was diverted and the flames could be seen from tjie centre of Paris.
