Later Trading Hours
Liquor sales had increased very little since the extended'hotel licensing hours came into effect on October 9, the chairman of Ballins Industries, Ltd (Mr N. W. Millner) told the annual meeting yesterday. There had been an increase in “off sales” trade in suburban hotels with wholesale and retail bottle stores. Mr Millner said that well-equipped suburban hotels were increasing botttle store and bar trade, while the centre city and inner area hotels situated in industrial areas were experiencing a fall in trading.
Business in most suburban hotels had generally increased but this had been offset by the extra overhead incurred by the new wage awards and expenses relating to longer trading hours. With the new trend for relaxed mixed drinking in suburban areas, it would appear that in any new developments the emphasis should be on licensed taverns or motor hotels in established residential districts, he said.
