University Strengthens Position In Water Polo

University went further Into the lead In the senior water polo competition after defeat* Ing Wharenul, 7-5, In the eleventh round of matches played last evening. Results:— University 7 (I. L. Gunthorp 4, W. R. Williamson, K. B. Thornton, G. M. Leek), Wharenui 5 (T. M. McGirr 2, G. Wild, I. Simson, R. B. Erickson). Beckenham 6 (R. W. Henry 2, D. Jury, L. Scott, F. McKenzie, L. D. Mclntosh), Christchurch 2 (J. Turpin, P. K. Hatchwell). Elmwood 6 (N. Chamberlain 4, M. J. M. Hay 2), Services 2 (G. Mitchell 2). CLOSI MATCH Although scrappy defence and poor passing, combined with the atrocious weather, made conditions unpleasant for spectators and players alike, the very closeness of the University and Wharenul teams kept interest high. The match was won by the students primarily because of faster breaks and superior goalshooting, and in spite of some blatant errors University showed that it is the strongest team in the competition. Beckenham reversed the result of its last match against Christchurch by winning 6-2 and in doing so showed glimpses of the good teamwork which took them to the top over the last few years. Some very hard end close

marking aeveral times threatened to spoil the game, but the referee retained control throughout and Beckenham took full advantage of its opponent's mistakes.

UNTIDY CAMB Elmwood and Services, the two bottom teams in the competition, struggled through an untidy match with Elmwood winning 5-2. Apart from two good goals by Chamberlain and a well-placed shot from 10 yards by Hay there was little to commend in the play of either team. Other results.—Senior reserve: Sockburn Park 3. University A 2; Spreydon 6, University B 1: Jellie Park 6. University C 2 Junior: Elmwood 7. Christchurch 2; Jellie Park 4. Spreydon 0; Wharenul 5. Sockburn Park 1.
