Kaikoura Prices

Sir,—For the last four years our family have holidayed at Kaikoura, and have found the fishing, swimming, and scenery fascinating. My only compliant concerns the open way we holiday makers a-e fleeced by the trades people. Fish and chips to take away costs 15c. I walked out without ordering, but have been told that they are neither of better quality nor greater quantity than the fish and chips bought for 10c in other areas. The only type of sandwiches we were offered were tomato and ham. The baker bakes on Monday, Wednesday and Friday only, but surely at holiday times bread rolls could be offered for sale. The last straw was my purchase of jus over 11b of braising steak for 56c. Every year I buy less and less from the shops up here. I would like to know why fish up here costs more than in Christchurch, and why eggs at the local stores along the coast cost up to 10c a dozen more. —Yours, etc., ONCE BITTEN. January 13, 1968. [Mr S. T. Barnett, President of the Trade Practices and Prices Commission, replies: “None of the foodstuffs save eggs, are under control of the Prices Act. There is no justification for offering eggs for sale in Kaikoura at a price in excess of that obtaining in Christchurch. The matter will be investigated.”]
