Fire In Bomber

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) LONDON, Jan. 251 A British nuclear Victor bomber was involved in a fire alert yesterday at Wittering R.A.F. airfield, Northamptonshire, the Defence Ministry confirmed yesterday. ■ “A fire started when there was a blow-back on one engine," a spokesman said. “But the airframe was undamaged and checks are now being made to see if there was any extensive damage to the engine.” The spokesman declined to say whether the bomber was armed with a nuclear weapon when the fire started. A Press Association air correspondent said it seemed unlikely that the plane was armed as it was undergoing a routine engine check at the time.

But Chapman Fincher in the “Daily Express” reported that the Victor was believed to have been carrying a Blue Steel hydrogen missile at the time.
