Newly Appointed To National Commission

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, January 25. The Minister of Education (Mr Kinsella), who is also Minister in Charge of U.N.E.S.C.O. affairs, today announced the appointment of new members of the National Commission for U.N.E.S.C.O.

The commission acts in an advisory capacity to the Government on the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation, and to Government delegations to the general conference of U.N.E.S.C.O. Mr Kinsella said the commission consisted of persons who, in addition to specialist knowledge, had broad experience and interests and were able to deliberate on policy and administration at a high level.

Mr J. Turnbull and Miss M J. Riley have been appointed to the commission for a second term. Mr Turnbull is secretary accountant of the New Zealand Dairy Produce Exporter Newspaper Company, and Miss Riley was formerly principal of Wellington East Girls’ College. Five other members have been appointed to the commission—Dr R. S. Duff, director, Canterbury Museum; Professor J. F Duncan, professor of theoretical and inorganic chemistry at Victoria University: Mr H. Hayden, lecturer in education at Victoria University and formerly

head of the division of comparative education at U.N.E.S.C.O. headquarters in Paris; Dr I. H. Kawharu, lecturer in anthropology at the University of Auckland, and Mrs M, M Burns, of Canterbury. Mr Kinsella said that the commission had three subcommissions to advise it on the main parts of U.N.E.S.C.O.’s programme, and that, under the terms of the commission’s constitution, the chairmen of these sub-com-missions who were not already members of the national commission were appointed to it so they could take full part in its deliberations. Mr Kinsella also announced the appointments of Mr D. Forsyth, of Dunedin, as chairman of the sub-commission on education and Mr F. Turnovsky as chairman of that dealing with social and human sciences and culture. Mr J. A. D. Nash, a senior scientist at the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, who is the department’s official representative on the national commission, is chairman of the sub-com-mission on natural sciences.
