Killing At Smithfield

(N.Z. Press Association) TIMARU, Jan. 24. Killing resumed at the Smithfield Freezing Works at 8 o’clock this morning. “We are expecting a normal day’s tally to be handled,” said the works manager (Mr N. S. Davis). Chainmen walked off the job a few minutes before 11 a.m. yesterday in protest at working conditions. Their complaint was about steam from an overflow of hot and cold water fed to the viscera tables alongside the chains. The water is required under Department of Agriculture regulations. Company staff yesterday improved the ventilation by installing an exhaust fan to remove the steam.
