NORTH B.H. SURPLUS RISES 4.2 p.c.

Mining surplus of North Broken Hill, Ltd, the silver, lead and zinc producer and investor, was $3,616,000 in the six months to December 31, a rise of $147,000, or 4.2 per cent on the same period of 1966. The slight recovery reflected higher sales of silver at increased prices but prices of lead and zinc continued to fall. The recovery was attributable to an increase in the surplus for the September quarter. The surplus for the December quarter eased $lO,OOO to $1,452,000. All the figures are before allowing for royalty, tax and other charges. During the latest period sales of silver rose from 1.725,265 ounces to 1,913,565 ounces. Silver prices jumped from 115.7 c an ounce to 159.6 c an ounce. Lead Sales The company sold 32,925 tons of lead compared with 33.834 tons in the first half of 1966-67, sales of zinc concentrates fell from 43,849 tons to 41,104 tons. Prices of both metals fell again, with lead down from $213.78 a ton to $199.15 a
ton and zinc from $255 a ton to $245 a ton.
