Busy Day For Firemen
Christchurch firemen yesterday had one of their busiest days in recent weeks, answering 12 calls between midnight and 11 p.m, As well as a major industrial fire in Woolston, a fire in the kitchen of a Shands Road house and a fire in a Post Office vehicle at Sumner, they were called to four other fires.
A fire in an unfinished fibreglass trawler, about 40ft long, at Glassex, Ltd, 3 Garlands Road, broke out about 6.13 p.m. The fire, thought to have started in fuel oil in the bilges, caused little damage. One unit from Sydenham and one from Woolston attended and breathing apparatus had to be used. At 12.43 p.m. an engine from Harewood was called to a fire in a box in a garage al Mr A. Simmanu’s property at 5 Wellesley Place. The fire caused little damage and had been put out when the brigade arrived. Two engines from New Brighton were called at 3.24 p.m. to a scrub fire on land in Aston Street owned by the Waimairi County Council. The firemen were at the area for about 90 minutes. The fire burnt about a quarter of an acre, but caused no property damage. A fire at the South Brighton camping ground in Halsey Street about 3.59 p.m. burnt a small area of scrub but caused no property damage. One machine from Woolston and one from St Albans attended.
The brigade also turned out last evening when a minor earth tremor set off the automatic alarm in a city building.
