Gunner Leonard Edward I Newman, aged 22, an Aus[tralian National serviceman, [was sentenced to five years imprisonment by a court-mar-tial today for the manslaughter of a young Australian officer in Vietnam on December 10. The sentence is subject to confirmation by the CommanIder. Australian Forces in I Vietnam, Major-General Douglas Vincent. Newman was also sentenced to be discharged Asked before the sentence was announced b. the courtmartial president, Colonel W. J. S. Gordon, if he had anything to say, Newman replied: “Just that I am innocent. (That's all I want to say, sir.”
