Live Shell Found

A Lyttelton man turned up a live shell with his rotary hoe while clearing his section on 32A Voelas Road on Saturday afternoon. Mr J. Smith just threw the shell aside because it was very rusty and seemed to be an ordinary metal object, and went on working. On Sunday, however, he had a second look at his find and decided it was a shell. He took it to the

Lyttelton police station. The Lyttelton police, in turn, passed the shell to the Army, which later Informed Mr Smith that the shell was live. Mr Smith, a waterslder, said yesterday that his five children were playing in his section when he found the shell. Captain E. D. Gerard, the Army ammunition technical officer at Christchurch, said the shell would be detonated.
