17 Records At Swimming

One New Zealand record and 16 Canterbury records were broken at the first two sessions of the 1968 centre championships at the Centennial Pool on Saturday.

The exceptional versatility shown by two Elmwood club swimmers. Miss T. Shipston and G. Walker—each of whom won three titles and gained a place in a fourth event —and the brilliance of the Commonwealth champion from Ashburton, D. F. Gerrard, were the most notable aspects of the first day of the meeting. Miss Shipston won the senior 440 yards medley, 110 yards butterfly and 110 yards backstroke —after a gripping duel with Miss J. Wright—and Walker, after winning the junior 220 yards breaststroke and 440 yards freestyle, had a recordbreaking win in the senior 220 yards medley. Later, Walker finished third in the men’s 110 yards freestyle, which Gerrard won comfortably. In his speciality, the 220 yards butterfly, Gerrard won by half the length of the pool; in both races the title went to B. Ward (Wharenui), the first Christchurch man home. In the 220 yards breaststroke. Miss L. Smith clipped a second from her already good record of 2min 58sec, and Miss Shipston, who was in close attendance throughout the race, improved 7sec and almost broke 3min. Catherine Whiting, who looks set for another fruitful meeting, won two titles in record time in the under-14 section, and helped Wharenui win the senior medley relay. A. B. Kindred failed to retain his men’s 110 yards freestyle title, but he was feeling the effects of five days hard training with M. Borrie (Otago), who is second to him among middle distance freestylers. Kindred hopes to be back to his best for the longer races later this week. Kindred did not look likely to hold Gerrard in the 10 yards final, and the Ashburton representative won handsomely from Ward and Walker. The surprise packet of the final was M. J. M. Hay, the national junior breaststroke 1 champion seven years ago, who beat Kindred and two prominent sprinters, B. M. Mustcnin and D. M. Kindle, for fourth place. Later, Hay helped Elmwood win the men’s freestyle relay. Both Ward and B. Layton smashed the centre record for

the 220 yards butterfly in trailing home after Gerrard. Ward’s new mark represented an improvement of 19sec —but this drastic reduction was long overdue. Walker showed excellent form in all strokes, and his new senior and junior record for the 220 yards medley was a just reward. R. J. Wilson, a former record-holder for the event, also beat the standing mark in gaining second place. The junior 220 yards breaststroke title was a bonus for Walker, as he had finished eight yards behind the favourite, M. King. However, King was disqualified for taking two strokes under water twice during the race, and the title went to Walker. King did not make the same mistake in the 110 yards race, and won comfortably. The diminutive Jocelyn Hay took a generous slice from her under-14 butterfly record and underlined her development by swimming second to Miss Shipston in the 440 yards medley. Her time of 6min 13.6 sec would have been a national senior record four years ago. In the field of record breaking the under-age swimmers were very active. The most successful were the Wharenui boys’ freestyle relay team of Gavin Haines, Mark Harding, Michael Lee and Roy Gray, with three records (under-12, under-13 and under-14) in one swim. Susan Hunter, the stylish 11-year-old all-ronnder, won two titles, but was pressed hard by Jaynie Parkhouse over 110 yards freestyle. The Lewis brothers, Mark, Brent and Matthew, collectively won five titles, while the Rowe sisters, Helen and Lyn, both won titles in record time. . / Rex Harding, a fair-haired visitor from the West Coast, was in a class of his own among the under-10 boys, and won two freestyle titles by vast margins. Inter-club competition at the championships should be intense. On Saturday, Wharenui and Spreydon each won 11 titles, and Elmwood gained 10. Then came Sockburn Park with six, St Albans with two, and North Beach with one. Abbreviations used in the results are:— A., Amberley: Ash., Ashburton; 8., Beckenham; Chev., Cheviot: C..
