THEIR DAILY BREAD
Two Hagley High School boys will have toasted 24,000 slices of bread by the time they have finished their holiday job. They are working for the Consumer Service at its test laboratory in Durham Street, where automatic and manual toast-
ers are being tested. Their job is to put the toasters through an endurance test, which means using each toaster at least 1000 times and watching for faults. The boys are Ross Payne and Freddie Peng, who comes from Singapore. Mr T. R. Pollard, director
of the laboratory, said yesterday that the boys were using 58 loaves of bread a day to toast 980 slices. The toast was going to a suburban piggery, but many workers near the laboratory had been calling in for some at tea and lunch breaks.
The toasters have already been tested electrically and for evenness of toasting. Next they will be subjected to chemical tests of their electro-plating. Six brands of automatic toasters and six brands of manual toasters are being tested.
