Strong Run For Second
(From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON The performance of the Ric carton-trained Royal Blue to finish eighth after losing several lengths at the start of the Anniversary Handicap was one of the best at Trentham on Saturday. Just as the last of the outside horses were brought into the stalls, Royal Blue got his head over the side of his stall. As N. Eastwood attempted to inform the starter, Mr L. G. Morris, of his problem, the field was sent away, and Mrs W. H. Williamson’s chestnut was tailed off. Royal Blue put in a great run and finished little more than four lengths from the winner, Pell Mell, which just beat Pheroz Pride. Another noteworthy run in the Anniversary Handicap was by the Wingatui veteran, Palisade, which was denied a run when Pheroz Pride sped up outside him before the home turn. Palisade finished eleventh. At a distance short of his best, this was a sound run which held promise for his race over a mile and a half today. Pell Mell showed marked gameness in winning the Anniversary. He is not very big, but he is tough, and responds gallantly to the most vigorous demands. He is raced in partnership by Messrs L. S. Otway and C. G. Vosper, and is trained at Cambridge by W. J. Bromby who has not had reason to regret his move from Trentham a few years ago. Pell Mell will be prepared for the George Adams Handicap on the final day of the meeting next Saturday.
