More Girl Scholars
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Jan. 21. A trend for more girls than boys to participate in the American Field Service scholarship scheme continued today when the latest batch of American teen-agers arrived to spend a year in New Zealand. Of the 32 scholars to arrive at Auckland international airport only nine were boys. Though most of the arrivals were at a loss to explain the imbalance, Mr A. S. Helm, the chairman of the national executive of the New Zealand branch of the scheme, said it was because basically girls were more adventurous than boys. “Also, boys think they might be getting behind a year at work or at university,” he said. Seventeen-year-old Chuck Marcy, from New York, suggested that many American youths would not leave home for a year because it would mean-letting down their baseball or football team.
