Yacht Race Drowning

(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, January 21. A youth was drowned when a 12ft catamaran capsized at French Bay, in the Manukau Harbour on Saturday. He was Brian John Flannigan, aged 18, a postal clerk, of 13 Portage Road, Green Bay. His body was recovered from a mudbank in French Bay about 7 p.m. yesterday. Mr Flannigan had been in the catamaran with Roy Thomas Hughes, aged 17, of Green Bay. They were in a race between members of the Blockhouse Bay Yacht and Motor Boat Club and the French Bay Boat Club when the accident happened, about 1.45 p.m. Officials at the race said conditions at French Bay at the time were treacherous and at least five boats capsized during the day.
