Stubborn Batting
First-day: Cast-Shlrlay MB; West-University M/4. West-University, owed its fine recovery and win, in the first case, to a stubborn fifth-wicket partnership between P. E. Wallace and R. K. Allen. This brought West-University within reasonable reach of East-Shir-ley’s first innings total, and the destructive fast bowling of D. G. Trist ensured full points for the competition leader. Wallace, dropped before he scored on the second day, went for his shots willingly and both he and Allen, if often sending the ball dangerously close to fieldsmen, played bright innings. P. A. Sharp built on this later with a flurry of fours to square leg. The East-Shirley innings wilted and died before Trist, who was bowling off his short run and with an old ball. Trist generated quite a lot of pace, found himself able to seam the ball considerably, and was assisted by some very feeble-hearted batting. P. A. Hern hit 15 off Sharp’s first over in a brief show of defiance but in less than an hour and a half the innings was over.
Allen and Wallace batted very capably again and were given good support by a free-strok-ing A. T. Waters, when WestUiriversity went in pursuit of the 123 runs needed in even time. With good running, firm stroke-playing, and from poor bowling, the runs were made with more than 20 minutes to spare. The best of the East-Shirley bowlers was G. D. V. Pulley, the medium-pacer. In the first innings, N. Kelly bowled unluck-
