Students Riot
I (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) SASEBO (Japan), Jan. 21. Violence flared again today outside the United States naval base in Sasebo as police clashed with hundreds of Left-wing students protesting against the courtesy visit of the nuclearpowered American aircraft carrier Enterprise. About 250 students tried to overwhelm a police barricade and break into the base. They threw rocks and swung staves, but were beaten back by riot police using high-powered water jets from fire trucks. The clash occurred on a bridge outside the base, the scene of several clashes in recent days, after the students had attended in a nearby park a mass rally sponsored by the Communist and Socialist Parties. . About 20,000 Leftists attended the rally to protest against United States policies lin Vietnam, but they did not I join the militant students, I who shouted and vowed to have “a showdown” with sailors from the Enterprise. The students belong to the Sampa faction of the threesplintered Federation of Students’ Association. The Sampa faction is the most militant of the organisation’s members.
Death of a Star.—Bert Wheeler, who, with Robert Woolsey, starred in some of the most popular comedy-team films in the 19305, has died at the age of 72. From Zeigfeld’s Follies, Wheeler graduated to Hollywood to make films which began with “Rio Rita” in 1930 and ended with “High Flyers” in 1936.—New York, January 20.
